Sam Allardyce
Bolton Wanderers Football Club

26 years ago, Sam Allardyce became the manager of Bolton Wanderers Football Club

26 years ago, Bolton Wanderers brought Sam Allardyce back to the club. A man who had played for the club, but managed just two other teams before arriving, would go on to take the Whites on one of their most successful periods, delivering top flight and European football to Bolton.

In 1999, Sam Allardyce and Bolton Wanderers were no strangers, but there was no indication of a reunion.

Born in the Black Country town of Dudley, the then defender signed for the Whites on a scholarship in 1969. At 17, just two years after singing for the club as a youth, Allardyce would make his debut for the then-Jimmy Armfield led side, losing 2-1 in the League Cup to Millwall at Burnden Park.

Whilst the start was ideal, Allardyce took his time to settle at Bolton. It wasn't until 1974 that he really established himself, this time under Ian Greaves, where he'd win Young Player of the Year that season.

A lifelong Bolton Wanderers fan, this club is the reason I began my journalism career. Since sitting in the stands as a kid over 20 years ago, I have gone on to work for the likes of the BBC and The Telegraph before everything led me back to here, to the football club I love.
