"We had to be patient": Fergal Harkin details how Bolton Wanderers shopped smart with a lower budget than others

As Bolton Wanderers prepared for life in the Championship, the club welcomed 13 new players through the door.
Steven Schumacher and Fergal Harkin both new that the Whites would have to work on a smaller budget than others, hoping they could replicate the work of a season before, utilising loans alongside smart signings. In the end, every position where bodies were needed, got filled, even if business was harder with the change in division.
The overarching goal has been to create a team that can compete in the Championship, all be it on a smaller budget than clubs around them.
Harkin, who orchestrated the club's 13 summer signings, believes that Wanderers will continue to be able to do that, so long as they are smart with where they spend their money.

EditorA lifelong Bolton Wanderers fan, this club is the reason I began my journalism career. Since sitting in the stands as a kid over 20 years ago, I have gone on to work for the likes of the BBC and The Telegraph before everything led me back to here, to the football club I love.
