Bolton Wanderers began their season on losing form, falling out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle. The Whites had the better of the chances in the first-half, but all would change as Xavier Simons was sent off half way through the second period. Down to ten, the game changed and Jamal Lowe brilliantly took the best chance of the game, chipping Jack Bonham to score the goal that won the game.
Four new signings began the game for Steven Schumacher's team and for the most part, all had a positive game. Ben Davies, Akin Famewo and Luca Stephenson all played in defence, whilst Gaizka Larrazabal took place on the right wing, a position that Bolton do not yet have a specialist in.
