New report shows bleak financial future for Championship clubs trying to compete: What it means for Bolton Wanderers

A new report that looks into the finances within the Championship has uncovered a series of significant overspending, as clubs up and down the division look to keep up with sides receiving parachute payments since falling out of the Premier League.
The report, co-authored by Professor Rob Wilson and Dr Dan Plumley, shows that sides are spending unsustainable amounts in order to stay in the rat race year after year.
Clubs relegated from the Premier League receive parachute payments for at least two years, with the first payment currently worth around £50 million and the second worth £40 million. The intention of the payments is too allow the sides to still invest into their squads, whilst dealing with the loss in revenue and returning their wage structure to one that matches the Championship.
